Lesson 8 Sound Systems
The Heart of every sound system is the mixer.
“Mixes” (blends) the sound.
Signal Flow: Mixer receives signals from microphones, instruments or CD/MP3 players, signal is processed for level and tone which is then sent to the output (speakers). The signal flows from the top of the mixer and then down through the channel.
Three functions of a mixer:
1. Changing the character of an individual sound making it louder, softer, brighter, fatter, etc.
2. Combining many sounds together
3. Blending (mixing) sound together

Powered vs. Unpowered
All mixers fall under two categories: Powered or Unpowered
Powered Mixer - Has an amplifier built into the case. (Similar to a stereo amplifier/receiver for home audio system).
Unpowered - Does NOT have an amplifier built into the case. Need an external power source/amplifier for the mixer to run.
