An instrument is a mechanism other than the voice that is used to produce musical sounds.
An instrument is made in different sizes that produce different ranges.
There are 6 "families" (categories) of instruments and are made in different sizes for range:
Tone color varies by register.
Register is part of an instrument's total range.
Use and makeup of instruments varies by culture.
Only a fraction of all instruments ever invented are in use today.
Groups frequently led by conductor using baton.
String Instruments
The violin, viola, cello (violoncello) and double bass form the symphony orchestra's string section. String instruments are tuned by by tightening or loosening the pegs.
The bow is tightly strung with horsehair and is the portion that is drawn over the strings to produce the sound.
String instruments are not found in Symphonic Bands.
