Electronic Instruments

Synthesizers are systems of electronic components that generate, modify and control sound.

Analog Synthesis - Based on representing data in terms of physical quantities and has a continuous electrical change.

Digital Synthesis - Based on representing sound as numbers using binary digits of 1s and 0s.

FM Synthesis - Uses a series of complex algorithms representing the physical quantities of sound waves as numbers.

Sampling - Involves placing brief digital recordings under the control of a synthesizer keyboard.

MIDI - Musical Instrument Digital Interface - Developed in 1983 by manufacturers for interfacing synthesizer equipment and computers.

Small computers were developed in the 1970s and 80s.

Modern composers connect all of these devices together, use software and create new types of music.

Characteristics of Electronic Instruments

Guitars, Keyboards, Synths, Drum machines, etc.  These instruments can be used in Science Fiction movies, something horror like (such as A Nightmare On Elm St.), movies about the future, action (Such as the Italian Job), or for a contemporary dance feel.
